THE NEW YORKER – THE JOHN UPDIKE TRIBUTE ISSUE
Feb 9 & 16, 2009

This double issue of The New Yorker which was a welcome arrival in my mail box yesterday may well come to be regarded as The John Updike Tribute issue.
There are two splendid essays on Updike, the first by author and long-term staffer at The New Yorker, Adam Gopnik, and the second by Roger Angell, fiction editor at the magazine since 1956.

The magazine is worth buying just to read these two superb essays BUT then later comes a real bonus. Sixteen pages of pieces selected from the more than 800 contributions that Updike wrote for The New Yorker between 1954 and 2008.
If you are an Updike fan DO NOT MISS THIS ISSUE.

I should also mention An interesting seven page piece by Claudia Roth Pierpont on James Baldwin titled, Another Country.

The New Yorker, Feb 9 & 16.
