Catcher sequel author defends book as 'parody'
16.06.09 The Bookseller

The author being sued by J D Salinger for copyright infringement is asking a judge to let his book be published, reports the Associated Press.
Attorneys for Fredrik Colting, who writes under the name John David California, submitted a 33-page "defendants' memorandum"in federal court in Manhattan. The papers say that his novel 60 Years Later is a legally protected commentary and parody of The Catcher In the Rye, and not an unauthorized sequel.

The book was already published in the UK but has now "gone out of stock", its publication in the US is on hold. Salinger, and his lawyers, want to see the book stopped, arguing that the book was "a ripoff, pure and simple". The book was originally marketed in the UK as a "freestanding sequel". It was later revealed that its author J D California was also its Swedish publisher.
