Gail Rebuck, the chair and chief executive of publisher Random House, has been made a Dame in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Ms Rebuck is one of only a handful of business figures to be recognised, which was expected given the global financial crisis.

The Random House boss said she was "incredibly surprised" by the honour.
"It's real recognition for everything that has been achieved at Random House," she added.
Ms Rebuck has become one of Britain's most successful businesswomen since taking charge of the publisher in 1991. The group is now the second largest publisher in the UK and Ms Rebuck has been honoured for her services to the industry.
Ms Rebuck, named Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year earlier this year, co-launched the World Book Day charity in 1998 and has held a string of other key industry roles. Under her leadership, Random House is also driving the expansion of literature through e-books and digital technology.
