GUIDE TO THE OTAGO CENTRAL RAIL TRAIL
This is a completely up-to-date guide — with latest information on accommodation, packages, routes and contact details — to one of New Zealand’s most popular scenic and historic routes.

The Otago Central Rail Trail is a hike and bike trail that follows the old railway line built through Central Otago in the late nineteenth century. It is 150 km long and has been developed for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

This excellent, thorough guide divides the trail into 12 easy-to-complete sections and includes information on:
*transport options to, from and along the trail, including luggage transfers, length and approximate times to comfortably complete each section
*what terrain to expect at each stage and interesting features along the way
*local plants and birdlife, plus a short history of the trail all the good spots to camp, swim, picnic and rest
* a complete list of Rail Trail accommodation, including prices and contact details.
The Guide is profusely illustrated with appealing photographs, three of which are show here. There is also a map of the trail.

The Otago Central Rail Trail attracts over 10,000 people every year (using the track in its entirety) with a significantly higher amount of people utilising some part of the track on a regular basis or on day trips. A large number of the trail users are from the North Island and overseas. The Otago Central Rail Trail will become incorporated into the planned national cycleway to be developed over the next few years.
Since Guide To The Otago Central Rail Trail by Gerald Cunningham was first published in 2003, it has reprinted several times.
Gerald Cunningham is a photographer and author who has written several books on Central Otago including Otago Central Rail Trail: A Pictorial Journey (2007). He lives beside the Rail Trail in the village of Lauder and has both cycled and walked the trail from one end to the other.
