HarperCollinsPublishers Announces Launch of
Print on Demand at Adelaide Writers’ Week

HarperCollinsPublishers is thrilled to announce the launch of its Print on Demand (POD) service which will allow Australian and New Zealand readers the chance to purchase individual copies of books that were previously out of print.

Among the titles included in this month’s first release of more than 140 titles are the New Zealand titles, Ganstsara: Alone Across Siberia by Ian D Robinson, Twisting Throttle Australia by Mike Hyde, Johanna’s World by O M Anderson, Ice Bird by David Lewis, Taming by Victoria McHalick, From the Heart by Helen Brown, Seduced by the Sea edited by Tessa Duder and Words on Wings by Jim Hopkins.

Some of these titles have been out of print for many years. Also included are some more contemporary Australian novels (such as Bernard Cohen’s Hardly Beach Weather), popular fiction (Jon Cleary’s Scobie Malone novel Degrees of Connection), as well as non-fiction (such as Nadia Wheatley’s biography The Life and Myth of Charmian Clift) and children’s books.

HarperCollins Publishing Director Shona Martyn says, ‘All of us at HarperCollins are excited about this initiative as it offers us the opportunity to keep books in print indefinitely. Previously many wonderful titles went out of print because it was not possible to generate an economic print run using traditional technology. But now advances in digital technology have ensured that it is possible to produce single copies in digital reprints that are of a similar quality to a standard print run. Even if only one person wants to buy a particular book, we can now supply them. However, we are confident that for some books, in particular, there will be more substantial demand. This is an exciting development for all who care about our cultural heritage — and for authors whose books will now be available again.’

The HarperCollins Print on Demand titles can be ordered by the public through booksellers for a small premium reflecting the ‘one off’ nature of the printing. Each book ordered will be printed at Griffin Press in Adelaide and then delivered, via the HarperCollins warehouse, to the bookseller for collection by the customer. The first release will be within the next month and new titles will be added to the program each month.
