SIMON WILSON FROM METRO ISSUES AN INTERESTING INVITATION

Metro is doing a big “Day in the Life of Auckland” exercise this Saturday, sending out a bunch of writers and photographers to capture the life of the city. I’m keen to include novelists, historians, social commentators, journalists – writers of all kinds, including poets.

The brief is very open: I’m looking for copy of all kinds, as long as it’s compelling, smart, edgy, beautiful, disturbing, witty or otherwise great to read. You could do 100 words on life at the corner dairy, or 1000 on the Mangere town centre after dark, or anything in between. Or a poem.

You could just soak stuff up. Or record an event. Ride the free trains, because they’re closing the motorway at Newmarket, or check out the chaos that causes on the roads. Go to Auckland’s ITM game at the half-finished Eden Park, or the secondary school cycling champs at Mt Wellington, or the Run Kids event at Orewa. Or the Our House Dance Party at Alexandra Park. Or go sailing, or go to a party.

Anything. As long as it’s somewhere in greater Auckland, and happens on the day.
That day is this Saturday, September 3. Sorry about the late notice. We’re defining it as dawn to dawn.

I’d like to hear in advance from anyone who wants to take part, so I can try to ensure we don’t have 3 people covering the same thing. But that’s not essential. If you suddenly decide on the day you want to write something, that’s fine too.

The deadline for submitting copy – to me, by email – SimWilson@acpmedia.co.nz -  is the following Friday: September 10.

Call or email with any queries. Thanks.
