Foyles takes over Grant & Cutler

The Bookseller - 21.03.11 - Graeme Neill

Foyles has bought Grant & Cutler with the foreign language bookshop moving to the independent's flagship store on Charing Cross Road.

Grant & Cutler had traded on Great Marlborough Street in central London and recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. It stocked more than 40,000 books, DVDs, CDs, games and software packages in more than 150 languages.

It moves to Charing Cross Road today [21st March], trading as Grant & Cutler at Foyles. The enlarged foreign languages department will be under the overall management of Sion Hamilton, the flagship shop's general manager. The new section will stock around 25,000 titles.

The bookshop is in consultation with around 15 staff employed by Grant & Cutler, with around 10 expected to move to either the retail foreign languages department or the commercial accounts division. Stephen Cooper, former m.d. of Grant and Cutler, will now be in charge of the commercial accounts division, which will include a specialist languages arm servicing schools, libraries, institutions, corporate businesses and subscription accounts. Grant & Cutler's website will continue to trade at its existing web address with cross links to the Foyles site.

Foyles c.e.o. Sam Husain said: "We are delighted that Grant & Cutler has found a new home at Foyles and very much look forward to creating what will be the best and most extensive foreign languages bookselling business in the UK. We already welcome customers from all over the world to Foyles and will be able to offer them an unrivalled range of books."

Cooper said: "I am very pleased that Grant & Cutler has successfully secured its future by relocating and merging the business with Foyles’ foreign languages and commercial accounts business. I look forward to managing the enlarged commercial accounts division and working with the senior management team at Foyles to continue to build on the success of the two companies in this specialist area."
