NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2012 ADELAIDE FESTIVAL AWARDS FOR LITERATURE CLOSE 5PM FRIDAY 28 OCTOBER 2011

Publishers and writers have until the end of October to nominate for the 2012 Adelaide Festival awards for literature and the chance to share in a prize pool of $145,000.
The awards celebrate Australia's writing culture by offering national and State-based literary awards, as well as two fellowships for South Australian writers.

South Australian Fellowships and Awards
Valued at $15,000 each, the two SA Fellowships are designed to provide two South Australian writers with a day-to-day living allowance while they pursue their writing projects.
The Barbara Hanrahan Fellowship is open to writers working in the areas of fiction, poetry, drama, scriptwriting, autobiography, essays, major histories, literary criticism or other expository or analytical prose.
The Carclew Fellowship is open to writers for young people in the genres of fiction, drama, poetry or screenwriting.
Valued at $10,00 each, the two SA Awards, are for writers who are living or primarily located in South Australia or who were born in South Australia and have maintained strong connections with the State.
The Jill Blewett playwright's award supports the creative development of a play by a South Australian emerging writer with the assistance of the State Theatre Company of SA.
The Unpublished manuscript award recognises the importance of new writing to a vibrant literary culture. Along with the cash prize, the recipient will also see the publication of the manuscript by Wakefield Press.
National awards
The seven national awards (of which the following six are open for nomination) judge the best works published in Australia in the previous two years in the genres of:
  • Children's literature ($15,000) - for a published children's book, fiction or non-fiction
  • Young adult fiction ($15,000) - for a published book of fiction aimed at readers aged approximately 12-18 years
  • Fiction ($15,000) - for a published novel or collection of short stories
  • Innovation ($10,000) -for a published book which departs from the conventional use of genre by borrowing elements from a number of genres such as fiction, non-fiction, biography, autobiography, poetry or cultural criticism
  • Non-fiction ($15,000) - for a published work of non-fiction demonstrating a command of the subject as well as a fluent and outstanding literary style
  • John Bray poetry ($15,000) - for a published collection of poetry
The seventh national award - the coveted Premier's Award ($10,000) - recognises the best published book among all the entries received and is awarded by the judging panel.
Entries to the 2012 Adelaide Festival awards for literature close at 5pm on Friday 28 October 2011.
Winners will be announced during Adelaide Writers' Week as part of the 2012 Adelaide Festival.
