Browsing for books was not as easy as today. Books were big and heavy. How to get easy access to all the ones you need to work with? There, I Fixed It has a fantastic article about a tool invented in 1588 by an Italian engineer, Agostino Ramelli.
The tool called the bookwheel was based on the design of a waterwheel and was able to hold over a dozen of separate titles.
