Rushdie: Indian Cops Invented Threats

This is starting to look like a Salman Rushdie novel filled with sinister religious plots and bumbling agencies. The author—who pulled out of the Jaipur Literature Festival in India after local authorities said assassins from the Muslim underworld were arriving to eliminate him—accused the Indian police on Sunday of fabricating the death threats to keep him away and avoid controversy. The latter didn't happen. “I’ve investigated, & believe that I was indeed lied to. I am outraged and very angry,” Rushdie tweeted. But the chief minister of the province, Ashok Gehlot, denied the fabrication, saying that it simply isn’t true. Maybe Rushdie’s next novel will be about a concocted plot to kill an author named Salman Rushdie.
