India Censors Google, Facebook

Google India removed content Monday on the orders of the Indian government after a court gave the search giant, as well as sites like Facebook, YouTube and Blogspot, two weeks to present plans to police their networks for “antireligious” and “antisocial” content. The case is raising censorship fears in the world’s largest democracy. The government has been furious about material insulting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ruling Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi, and religious groups. Indian officials say the internet standards of the U.S. are not acceptable for a country like India.
