David Ashton was an ordinary bloke. Born in England, he emigrated as a child, grew up on the North Shore and went to Rangitoto College, married happily and lived in Takapuna. Then he developed Multiple Sclerosis and became extraordinary.

His illness attacked relatively slowly, but by degrees it took his strength, his ability to work, his marriage, and his independence. But despite his restricted lifestyle, he set about helping others in the same predicament by writing a book about it, using a head-mounted laser pointer to pick out each letter at a time.

Cripin Place is an extraordinarily honest, tell-all tale about the steady loss of ability that comes from living with Multiple Sclerosis - and yet it's a tale of inspiration, strength, and laugh-out-loud moments. David writes with a strong sense of humour, finding ways to laugh at the most dire situations that would have others squirming with embarrassment.
