Women without Men is a film adaptation of Shahrnush Parsipur's magicrealist novel. It is set in Iran in 1953, when a British/American backed coup removed a democratically-elected government.  It weaves the story of four women during this time.
Shirin Neshat's work in photography and short film will be famiiar to many from her compelling exhibition at Auckland Art Gallery in 2005. The Gallery acquired her work Tooba, a twin-screen video installation, also inspired by Parsipour's novel.
Neshat is a major international artist who won the Golden Globe at the Venice Biennale.
Born in Iran in1957, she currently lives in New York. From a privileged background she left Iran before the 1979 Revolution and the fall of the Shah.
Much of her work explores, in poetic and often highly dramatic imagery, the dynamics between 'east' and 'west', gender issues and Islam.
