Charlie Skelton is a British journalist, olive farmer,
comedy writer, and script editor of the television series 10 O'Clock Live. He
has been writing for The Guardian on the secretive Bilderberg organisation.
8:40 Clive Bibby
Clive Bibby is funding director for the Save the Wharf
charitable trust in Tolaga Bay. The restored historic wharf, the longest
concrete wharf in an open marine environment in the Southern Hemisphere, was
reopened this week by Prime Minister John Key as part of the Transit of Venus
celebrations.
9:05 David Skilling
David Skilling is a former director of think-tank The New
Zealand Institute. He now runs Landfall Strategy Group, a Singapore based
advisory firm that provides advice on strategic issues to governments, and
spoke at the Transit of Venus forums.
9:45 Filomena Tuivanualevu
Filomena Tuivanualevu is a Young Women's Officer for the
Fiji Women's Rights Movement, working with issues such as law reform, women's
rights, and young women's leadership, and is involved with the Pacific Young
Women's Leadership Alliance, Oxfam International Youth Partnership, and the
Emerging Leaders Forum Alumni. She is currently preparing for Fiji’s upcoming
constitutional reform and elections in 2014, and is one of a group of Pacific
Parliamentarians meeting in New Zealand for a day-long open hearing on
adolescent sexual and reproductive health in the Pacific.
10:05 Playing Favourites with Jane and Wyn Davies
Jane
Davies has been Chief Executive of Manchester Science Parks since 2000, and
chairs the Manchester Innovation Group, the lead body for innovation in the
Manchester city region. She was appointed President of the Advisory Council of
the International Association of Science Parks in 2009 and received an OBE in
2011 for services to innovation. Her husband, Wyn Davies, has conducted for
many international orchestras and opera companies, and has been director of
music for New Zealand Opera since 2005. His current production, Rigoletto,
plays in Auckland on 9, 13, 15 and 17 June.
11:05 Teju Cole
Writer, street photographer and art historian Teju Cole
was raised in Nigeria, and lives in New York. He is the author of the 2007
novella, Every Day is for the Thief, and the 2011 novel, Open City (Faber, ISBN
978-0-571-27943-2), and is currently working on a non-fiction narrative of
Lagos, and on a Twitter project called Small Fates. He is visiting New Zealand
as a guest of the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria
University, and will appear in conversation with Damien Wilkins at Unity Books
in Wellington from 12pm on 11 June.
11:45 Uwe Kolbe
Uwe Kolbe was born in East Berlin, and is one of
Germany’s best-known contemporary authors, receiving many prizes and awards
including the Heinrich Mann Prize from the Academy of the Arts in Berlin in
2012. He is visiting New Zealand with fellow poets Brigitte Oleschinski and
Ulrike Almut Sandig, for The Transit of Venus Poetry Exchange. Organised by the
Goethe-Institut, the International Institute of Modern Letters, the
Literaturwerkstatt Berlin, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage and the New
Zealand Publishers Association, this provides an opportunity for New Zealand
and German writers to collaborate within the framework of the Frankfurt Book
Fair, at which New Zealand is this year’s guest of honour. Uwe will appear with
other poets at two free public events in Wellington: Passages - Readings Around
the Transit (6pm, 13 June, Adam Art Gallery), and Berlin Poetry Night (5pm, 14 June, New Zealand
Film Archive).
