The 21 works in the running for the five Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards have been announced.
The awards provide $25,000 each for fiction, non-fiction, drama, poetry and writing for young adults. The winners also go into the running to win the Victorian Prize for Literature, which carries an additional $100,000 in prize money, making it the richest in the country.
The 2012 awards program also includes two biennial awards: the $15,000 Award for an Unpublished Manuscript, and the $20,000 Award for Indigenous Writing.
This year’s shortlist features works by authors at all stages of their careers, covering subjects as diverse as Australian pioneering history, Indian philosophy, political intrigue, youth homelessness, immigration, cookery and the world of country show-jumping.
Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu encouraged readers everywhere to have the chance to have their say,by voting for their favourite work to win the 2012 People’s Choice Award.
“This shortlist provides 21 reasons to celebrate Australian literature, so I encourage you to get involved, get reading and experience Australia’s best writing.”
The winners will be announced at the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards
ceremony on Tuesday 16 October 2012.
