Alberton launch of Urban Chicks

More than 100 people gathered at Alberton, the historic homestead in Mt Albert, on Sunday afternoon for the launch of Urban Chicks. It was a really enjoyable occasion and a substantial sum of money was raised for The Sanctuary, an animal refuge north of Matakana where over recent months Shawn and Michael Bishop have rescued, rehabilitated and then rehomed more than 1400 caged hens. Highlights of the afternoon included musician and chook-lover Billy Farnell playing the old but very well maintained piano in the ballroom, Julie Biuso in her role as MC, Pat Donovan reading one of husband Don's poems and David Cunliffe presiding over the silent auction and various raffles. Once the official part of the afternoon was over, we all adjourned to the gorgeous old mansion's wrap-around verandah to partake of a delicious afternoon tea served on Royal Albert china.
