14.03.13 | Lisa Campbell - The Bookseller
Presenting the award, Gareth Hardy, APS chairman, said there had been a "wafer thin" gap between first and second place, with Palgrave Macmillan just missing out. The award was judged on which publishers give reasonableterms to booksellers, how regularly head offices go out to visit them, rep support, the books they publish, publishers' websites and how they deal with returns.
John Smith's won in three categories, taking the Chain Bookshop of the Year award, while Bookshop of the Year went to John Smith's in UEL Docklands and Bookseller of the Year was awarded to Gillian Isbell of the UEL Docklands shop. Isbell took the award for being willing to work with publishers on an "equal basis", for creating revenue and having excellent knowledge of lecturers.
Distributor of the Year was Wiley, while the Rep of the Year award went to Russell Clarke of Cambridge University Press. Presenting Clarke's award, Jacqui Gadd, owner of Marylebone Books, said he was chosen because "the word 'no' does not appear to be in his vocabulary" and because he was "cheerful, friendly, knew what booksellers wanted and was very knowledgeable".
The award for Outstanding Achievement went to Colin Marshall of Leicester University Bookshop.
Summing up the night and the winners, Roger Horton, c.e.o. of Taylor & Francis, said: "This industry is filled with great people and I am proud to be a part of it. It is important we continue to work together to build relationships for the future."
