The National Book Foundation has awarded its 2013 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to E. L. Doctorow and its 2013 Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community to Maya Angelou. Both will receive their honors at the National Book Awards on November 20.

Both USA Today and the Daily Beast offer their fall book picks (30 and 21 books, respectively). Books making both lists include:

BLEEDING EDGE, Thomas Pynchon
THE LOWLAND, Jhumpa Lahiri
ONE SUMMER: America 1927, Bill Bryson
THE GOLDFINCH, Donna Tartt
THE MOST OF NORA EPHRON, Nora Ephron
DOUBLE DOWN, Mark Halperin & John Heilmann

In addition, the USA Today list included 4 titles from our Fall 2013 Buzz Book Sampler -- Sue Grafton's W IS FOR WASTED, Elizabeth Gilbert's THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS, and Amy Tan's THE VALLEY OF AMAZEMENT, and Wally Lamb's WE ARE WATER -- while Jonathan Lethem's DISSIDENT GARDENS landed on the Daily Beast list.

USA Today also highlights "cool fall authors" Billy Crystal, Veronica Roth, and Tom Perrotta, while Amazon's Sara Nelson, BN's Patricia Bostelman, and McLean & Eakin's Matt Norcross predict additional fall hits.
