Takarunga Mt Victoria Heritage Walk

Put your walking shoes on this weekend and learn what Takarunga Mt Victoria can tell us about its long history. Two prominent Devonport locals will lead a guided walk around Takarunga Mt Victoria: writer and archaeologist Dave Veart and Ngati Whatua kaumatua John Retimana.   The tour will reveal the long history of the mountain, its cultural importance both to Maori and Pakeha and its many interesting places, including Fort Victoria, the signal station, the old water reservoir and the world-famous folk club, the Bunker. Takarunga Mt Victoria provides a beautiful vantage point from which to imagine Maori life in Tamaki Makaurau. The walk will finish with an open afternoon at the Michael King Writers' Centre, where tea and coffee will be available. The event will take place rain or shine - if the weather is too wet, the talk will be held in the Michael King Writers' Centre. The walk will take about 90 minutes from 1 pm and the centre will be open until 4 pm. It will be suitable for all ages, although parts of the walk will be steep. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The open afternoon is hosted by the Devonport Friends of the Michael King Writers’ Centre and is part of the Auckland Heritage Festival.
