Media Release
High calibre design from publishing houses of all types and sizes was showcased at the PANZ Book Design Awards, hosted by the Publishers Association of New Zealand, announced tonight.
Modern coverArchitectural history book Modern, with design by Arch MacDonnell of InHouse Design, was the dominant title of the night, winning the overall Gerard Reid Award for Best Book sponsored by Nielsen Book Services. Modern also took both the Random House New Zealand Award for Best Illustrated Book and the Mary Egan Publishing Award for Best Typography
Convening judge Gideon Keith described the book as ‘a complete design’ and example of ‘bold decision-making’, while adding that ‘choices about the typography and colour perfectly capture the period of the subject matter, while remaining utterly contemporary.’
Book of New Zealand Words was the winner of the PANZ Award for Best Non-Illustrated Book. The judges highlighted many elements of Pieta Brenton’s design, with specific mention of ‘spot on’ stock choice and typesetting, before concluding that ‘the jacket, case cover and endpapers are brilliant, reminding us that language can indeed be colourful’.
Designer Alan Deare was doubly rewarded with two category wins. He took home the 1010 Printing Award for Best Cookbook for the second year running – this time for Josh Emmett’s Cut – as well as the HarperCollins Publishers Award for Best Cover for Peter McLeavey. The judges described Cut as having ‘an intelligent choice of typography’ as well as ‘great photography that lets the food shots be the hero’, while Peter McLeavey’s cover had ‘just the right balance between text and image’.
Dreamboat Books’ The Boy and the Cherry Tree took away the Scholastic New Zealand Award for Best Children’s Book. Previously winner of the overall Best Book prize for Two Little Bugs, this is the third time that Rowan Sommerset of Dreamboat has been a finalist in the PANZ Book Design Awards.
The winner of the Edify Award for Best Educational Book was awarded to Living by the Moon, designed by Sam Bunny, also a finalist in this year’s young designer award. The judges thought ‘the interior of the book lives up to the cover by delivering the bilingual text in a spacious and elegant manner’.
The winner of the PANZ Young Designer of the Year Award was Kalee Jackson, whose work demonstrates ‘a poetic lightness of touch’.  Presented to a designer under the age of 35, the award focuses on merit, innovation of form, quality of production and appropriateness to the intended market. Jackson’s portfolio fulfilled these criteria, said the judges, ‘showing a deft understanding of typography and sensitivity to the imagery and context.’
2014 PANZ Book Design Awards judges
The convening judge of this year’s PANZ Book Design Awards was Gideon Keith, a graphic designer and creative director with more than twenty-five years of industry experience. Joining him on the judging panel were broadcaster Noelle McCarthy, and designers Cameron Gibb and Alan Deare.

Our congratulations to all of this year’s winners and finalists.
