Bloomsbury Adds Conway; Full Fathom Digital; New Rizzoli Bookstore Lease

Publishers Lunch

Bloomsbury has purchased the 200-title naval and military history list of Conway from Pavilion Books in the UK (the rebranded version of Anova). Bloomsbury will integrate the titles into their existing lines. Terms were not disclosed, but the Bookseller notes that Conway publisher John Lee will leave after 20 years in that position.

James Frey's packaging company Full Fathom Five is launching a digital imprint that intends to issue a new ebook every week starting October 1. Mashable, which reports the news, explains (?) FFF will publish "genre e-books that the new imprint believes wouldn't fit into a traditional publishing model but would resonate with digital-savvy modern readers." Understand? Frey says, "We are looking forward to discovering unconventional projects that have the potential to connect with a wider community of readers that haven’t been available to them before."

Rizzoli has signed a lease to open a new bookstore at 1133 Broadway in New York, between 25th and 26th streets, replacing the 57th Street that was closed recently. The 5,000-square-foot space is said be the same size as the previous three-story location, but all on one floor.

Barnes & Noble will report fiscal first quarter earnings before the opening of the market on Tuesday. Consensus analysts expectations look for an improved net loss of 68 cents per share, and sales of $1.26 billion (down about 5 percent from a year ago). Shares have traded strongly this year and are up 20 percent over the past 3 months, driven by news of the intended spinoff of Nook Media and near their highest level in years. In June, the bookseller had forecast for the coming fiscal year "both retail comparable bookstore sales and core comparable bookstore sales to decline in the low-single digits” while College comps were "also expected to decline in the low-single digits."
