Louise Erdrich will be presented with the Library of
Congress Prize for American Fiction at the National Book Festival later this
year, honoring a"body of work distinguished not only for its mastery of
the art but also for its originality of thought and imagination."
Librarian of Congress James Billington said in the announcement,
"Throughout a remarkable string of virtuosic novels, Louise Erdrich has
portrayed her fellow Native Americans as no contemporary American novelist ever
has, exploring—in intimate and fearless ways—the myriad cultural challenges
that indigenous and mixed-race Americans face."
Shortlists were announced
for the UK's big Greenaway
and Carnegie
Children's Book Awards. Notably, Sally
Gardner's TINDER was nominated for both awards. Gardner won the
Carnegie two years ago for MAGGOT MOON.
