The Royal Society of Literature April News

Amnesia and other stories
19 May, 7pm, The Bloomsbury Theatre
In conversation with biographer and critic Hermione Lee, twice Man Booker winner, Peter Carey reflects on how Australia has forfeited democracy by ‘brown-nosing’ the CIA, why privacy should be an inalienable right, and what it is like to write about Australian politics while living in New York. He also considers his latest novel Amnesia in the context of his other work.

This event is hosted jointly with the Australia / New Zealand Festival of Literature and the Arts, and Intelligent Life magazine.

Finding Wonderland
15 June, 7pm, The Courtauld Institute of Art

Since its first publication 150 years ago, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has become the most popular and influential children’s story of all time. Robert Douglas-Fairhurst, whose biography of Lewis Carroll,The Story of Alice: Lewis Carroll and The Secret History of Wonderland, is published this spring, investigates the other story that lurks between the lines of Carroll’s book – his mysterious friendship with Alice Liddell, the real girl he transformed into a fictional heroine – and explores the history of the imaginary world he created for her.
